I can't give a higher rating than 3 at this time. I have been using these filters for at least 6 months or more. Our indoor kitty seems to like the Fresh & clear fountain. It does require maintenance however. What I haven't figured out yet is the source of slippery, slimy plastic parts that are cleaned on a weekly basis. The filter may contribute due to it's "carbon" composition. I have used filtered water (undersink filter) & city water (chlorinated) separately in the past. It doesn't seem to make a difference. What I'm finding now is that water "pump" needs dis-assembly every week to clean out black pieces. I would describe them like the skin on exposed paint that was stored in it's original can but a lot thinner. Is the carbon filter a contributor? I don't know. Is the cat's saliva a contributor, I don't know. My cleaning routine is dismantling the foutain & soaking in a mild clorox solution for 30 minutes then rinsing & drying weekly.
