5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent small animal fountain, October 21, 2009

I ordered this fountain from KV Vet Supplies through Amazon and received it less than a week later. Unfortunately, the piece that holds the pump in place had broken off during shipping. I called KV Vet on Saturday, Oct. 17, and received the replacement on Wednesday, Oct. 21. I have to say that the customer service at KV Vet is outstanding!
Now, about the fountain itself -
What I really like about it is that it is a three tiered water container. The area where the water is pumped up serves as the first bowl. It then flows over to the small bowl a little bit lower than that and finally ends up flowing into the lowest bowl (which is also the largest). So if debris or fur gets into the water, it settles in the lowest bowl and there are still two areas with clean, flowing water.

This fountain is also very quiet, but has a good flow of water. It's replacing a Petmate fountain that is still in working condition but has a lower flow rate and only one very shallow bowl... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Quiet and Cat Approved Design, January 12, 2010

Our new Cat Mate Pet Fountain is replacing an old Petmate fountain. We, and our cats, prefer the Cat Mate because of the following reasons:

- Quiet design. The Petmate was very noisy. Both fountains actually have the same motor, but the Cat Mate fountain has a special clamp which prevents the motor from vibrating and therefore creating noise. The old Petmate's motor relied on suction cups which allowed the motor to vibrate against the frame of the fountain. The new Cat Mate fountain is very quiet.

- 3 pools of water with 2 waterfalls. This design allows for the cats to drink from two elevated pools of moving water, or two waterfalls, or the larger pool of still water. This also allows our cats to drink from the same fountain at the same time. They also seem to prefer the water falls over the Petmate's water ramp. The design also has a faster water flow rate compared to the Petmate (the cats seem to prefer this too).

- Easier to clean. The... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Cat Mate Pet Watering Fountain, December 28, 2009

Excellent product. I have used several other brands of pet fountains for my cats and this style is the best. First, it is very quiet and does not have the usual splashing sound. However, it does efficiently airate the water with 2 waterfalls. There are 3 pools of water from still water to a flowing stream and the cat can select which from which to drink. The water is filtered and a very strong pump circulates the stream.

This unit is very simple to clean. The entire top pops off to allow for a good scrubbing and to change the filter. I clean it about once a week; the water is still clean, but the walls get a slight slippery feel. Other water pumps seems to leave a film of household dust on the water surface, but this unit always has a clean surface. My cat adapted to it easily. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars All 3 cats love it, December 21, 2010

This review is from: Pioneer Ceramic Drinking Fountain Big Max (Misc.)
I had been looking for the perfect fountain that wouldn't stand out too much in my room. I've had plastic fountains in the past that would have film grow on them pretty quickly between cleanings so I was unsure that I'd buy one at all. I have three cats and actually bought this one for one of them in particular who loves to knock his water bowl to make waves - and spilled it often. He is very happy with this product. But a pleasant surprise is that one of my other cats is ten years old with a chronic respiratory infection that in his later years has led to high sodium and other bad readings in his blood work. A month prior to getting this fountain he'd been in ICU for a week and after being released I had to administer SubQ fluids nightly. He drank prior to my getting the fountain but once it got here he drank so much more - even sleeps by it sometimes. He's by no means cured but I no longer need to give him the SubQ nightly which is a huge relief. All three cats share the... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars A godsend!, December 30, 2010
This review is from: Pioneer Ceramic Drinking Fountain Big Max (Misc.)
I did a lot of research for dog fountains. I have a mastiff, a cocker spaniel, a maine coon cat, and a hemingway cat. I'm constantly having to refill their water bowls throughout the day and I feel especially terrible when I'm not home and they run out of water so I wanted to find a fountain that had a large water capacity and would be able to stand up to a mastiff.
First of all, the assembly was easy. Three simple steps and I had it together within a few minutes, running with water and everything.
The ceramic material for this fountain is genius! It's still lightweight, looks phenomenal, and doesn't scratch easily. Plus the mastiff can't shove it around all the over the place. :)
The bix max holds A LOT of water! I was thrilled. Less bending over with my bad back. All I have to do now is pout a pitcher of water in the main bowl. Super easy.
So far haven't had to clean it. Looks easy though. If the assembly was that simple I'm sure the cleanup will be too. The cats... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Looks good, Cats love it, but Noisy pump, April 12, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Pioneer Ceramic Drinking Fountain Big Max (Misc.)
I have tried the Drinkwell 360 (not a very good product) and currently own two Drinkwell Platinums along with this product. Two immediate observations are that the filter is minuscule on this Pioneer compared to the surface area of the Drinkwell Platinum and while the pump is much smaller and seemingly lower flow than the Drinkwell Platinum, it is louder. In fact, while the primary noise comes from the dropping water on the Platinum, on low setting, it is still quieter than the low grinding sound of this product which is also naturally less pleasant. The Drinkwell Platinum has a detachable reservoir on the back to fill it, whereas this product you need to fill up the base which is a bit heavier since its ceramic and is too large for my refrigerator's filtered water dispenser, or use a separate pitcher. The surface of the water on this product can at times develop "slobber foam" from the cats saliva in a stagnant corner, which is not seen on the Drinkwell Platinum.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad product design, January 4, 2008
By
My complaint for these brushes is the poor product design, specifically, with the tips of the biggest and the smallest brushes. To clean around all the sharp corners well, it is important for the tips of these brushes to be covered with a lot of bristles. Guess what, the tip of the smallest brush is prety much dominated by the metal wires, so when you try to clean, instead of getting the bristles to touch and rub against the surfaces, it's mostly the metal wires that come into contact. Last time I checked, it's the bristles that clean, not the metal wire. Same with the biggest brush: The way the metal wires wrap around the sponge tip to hold it to the handle prevents the sponge from coming into full contact with the surfaces.

The product designers for the brushes don't deserve to be product designers. Do you know how much it takes to design a simple floor mop? A lot. A good product designer has to think about which yarn absorbs water well, how much water to absorb so the... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars CONFUSED, September 13, 2009

This review is from: Drinkwell Pet Fountain Cleaning Kit (Misc.)
I've had the Drinkwell fountain for a couple of years, great product. Once a month I take it apart and throw everything except for the pump in the dishwasher. Works great!! Unless you don't own a dishwasher - forget the brushes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great sizes, bad construction, April 22, 2008
By

I am glad for the sizes but the construction is poor and the bristles too stiff to do a good job cleaning. I still have to break out the pipe cleaners for the small spots and the rag for the large. The bristles don't bush out at the end so when you push the brush into the well, you are scraping the metal end against the bottom - the metal end doesn't do a great job scrubbing the residue off the bottom of the well.
Bamboo makes a Kong cleaner with a suction cup that is better designed and has a small brush in the handle. You'll still need the pipe cleaner for the smaller pieces though.
